  • Fingerpainting with Guacamole

Annabelle set up an elaborate scheme of stuffed animals today around a pet rubber snake she found and befriended. “Mom, do you want to pet my snake? Her doesn’t bite.” she said to me. “Sure,” I said and petted the rubber thing. Henry refused to pet it, however, and ran the other direction. Then Annabelle pulled the cushion off the bench at the foot of our bed and set it up on her bed and made a “boat.” Henry tried…

  • Slummy Mummy

Newsflash: It has been confirmed that I am definitely a Slummy Mummy. I went to the curriculum meeting at Annabelle’s preschool tonight with all the mothers with their blow-dried hair and impeccable suits. I was the one with chocolate fingerprints all over my skirt, oatmeal dripped down the front (don’t ask me how this happened–I changed my shirt right before leaving), and hair that hadn’t been combed, possibly since I awoke this morning. On the positive side, my toenails are…

  • Mermaids, Fairies, Pillows of Rose Petals

Annabelle’s hair obsession continues. She wants long hair, and after our puppet making adventure (making sock puppets), she kept pulling out the purple yarn and asking me to make her into a puppet. “How will I make the yarn stick to your head?” I asked her. “Sew it on,” she replied. “We can’t sew yarn onto your head,” I explain, “You’re not a sock.” We reached a good compromise by tying long pieces of yarn onto a hat my sister…

  • Wild Dances and Gnome Beards

Well, another sweltering day in New Orleans with sick babies, but we made the most of it. Let’s see, highlights of our day included taping blankets on a box, sewing yarn on a sock and creating a puppet theater; wearing fairy wings and emptying out the refrigerator for a “picnic;” dancing foolishly and wildly around the living room (with kids so captivated they didn’t even participate at first, just watched me, stupefied, as I ran in circles whipping my head…

  • Henry’s Shadow

Henry was totally amazed today when he noticed his shadow following him around the kitchen. He kept walking back and forth and acting a little worried that this thing was following him and touching his feet. Then he turned around and walked toward the window, looking over his shoulder to see if it was still following him. It was. He followed me into the sunroom and his shadow kept appearing every time he passed a window. This is one of my…

  • First Day of Preschool

Well, the first morning at Annabelle’s preschool went incredibly well. She ate a good breakfast of angel hair pasta nests, her favorite meal, and got dressed and out the door on time, wearing her little pink dress that has the word “Annabelle” monogrammed across the chest. On the way there, I told her the teachers would be speaking to her in a different language. She told me how she loves different languages. She immediately jumped in playing playdough with the…

  • Annabelle’s Unicorn

Today we were trying to get everything ready for Annabelle’s first day of preschool tomorrow. Henry was trying to walk around the rug in my slippers and Annabelle was hanging from the curtain rod in her closet doing her “exercises.” Annabelle said, “Mom, I need my red dress that’s a unicorn.” “I don’ t think you have a red dress with a unicorn on it,” I said, putting extra clothes in her backpack. “Mom! My unicorn!” she said more emphatically….

  • Annabelle the Sunflower

Today Henry and I took Annabelle to meet her new preschool teachers–she starts on Monday if we can get up in time. It’s a french immersion school and after greeting her teachers with “bon jour!” she and Henry ran off and played. I nearly had to bite my fist (ala Lenny in Laverne and Shirley) to keep from weeping. I have so many conflicting emotions. I want her to live a slow-paced relaxed life in her own rhythm. And I…

  • Aston Martins and Martinis?

A small box arrived in the mail from a Tuscan store. I thought this was bizarre as I hadn’t ordered anything. Things got even stranger when I opened it. The numbers 007 were printed discreetly on the outside. I carefully unfolded the top, and inside was the nastiest smelling candle I’ve ever smelled. I hadn’t ordered it, George had to have ordered it, which now sent things spinning into the twilight zone. George HATES scented candles and never misses an…
