Backpacking in 1990! Switzerland!
I have always believed in one world one love! I believe people should be able to go wherever they want to go anytime they want no matter where they were born or currently live! Did you know I was once almost sent home from London because they found my belly dance costumes and theater resumes in my suitcases? I don’t love answering personal questions from strangers, so when the guy started asking me why I was in London and where I was staying and how much money I had, I found ti intrusive and got very vague.
I was detained for hours, while the cute but annoying customs officials searched me and I made use of my extra time by practicing my headstands and cartwheels in the airport. So rude! I had no idea I wasn’t allowed to work anywhere in the world. Obviously, if I had booked a job, I would have gone through the proper channels to work legally, but I’m not allowed to carry costumes and resume with me? (Remember this is pre-internet.)
In a hilarious twist, three weeks later, my best friend, Kim came to join me and got the same guy!! He asked her who she was visiting and she said, “My friend.” He said, “Is your friend a belly dancer named Marci Johnson?” What are the chances? She had joked that she would tell customs she was there on business and when they asked what kind she would say “monkey business!”
