Today’s Dashing Divorcee is Icon Marilyn Monroe.

My admiration for Marilyn Monroe’s hope and chutzpah grew when viewing her through the lens of Divorcee. When I see the photos of her weeping while leaving the courtroom after her divorces, I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her it’s going to be all right. Her first marriage at the age of twenty lasted four years, her second to a legendary baseball player lasted ten months, and her third to a famous playwright lasted four years. Why do I not mention their names? Because this is about Marilyn, not the men she married. This is about a woman with a tragic childhood, who stepped into the ring and got knocked down over and over, but went right back in again, making a massive splash in our culture because of her courage and dedication. This is about a woman who put on her lipstick and continued working on her art, even while going through her heartbreak. This is about a woman who made bold decisions in her life to reinvent herself over and over. Though in the end she lost the battle to stay empowered, I am choosing Marilyn as a Dashing Divorcee for all the years she managed to keep her chin up and keep on stepping into the ring.
