Excellent reasons to Swim in the Sea…As if we needed more…

We love taking the kids to swim in the ocean. We knew it was the best “school” for their early years, where everything they learn is through their senses. What better place to explore science, nature, environment, and get exercise too? But here are even more reasons to take a dip in the sea! This Is Your Brain on the Ocean

    The Butcher and the Butterfly

My bus arrived, and I loaded my bags and sat down. When I looked back out my window, the butcher was standing outside, looking at me, his moustache curled up as he pointed his finger. I looked where he was pointing, and saw the butterfly fluttering right by my window, the sun shining through its wings like they were delicate stained glass windows in an ancient cathedral, and I had to glance down to make sure I was actually on a bus and not a magic tapestry.

  • Always an adventure

My sister calls me Inspector Clouseau because my clumsiness often leaves a trail of near-miss-disasters in my wake. For example, I might burn my hand taking cookies out of the oven at her house. I might yell and drop the cookie sheet on the counter. The spoons might clatter out of the mixing bowl onto the floor, and I might bend over to pick them up, hitting my head on the hot cookie sheet when I stand up, sending the…

Chasing Rainbows and Finding a Pot of Gold on the Isle of Skye

There are songs and poems and endless legends about rainbows, and I love them all. In fact, I consider myself a bit of a rainbow connoisseur. I have seen my fair share of rainbows, but nothing prepared me for the day we saw thirteen rainbows in one day on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. THIRTEEN! My best friend, Kim and I were fairy hunting and researching my ancestry on the Isle of Skye. (This was 1995 before the internet,…

Healing and Dealing with Grief and Trauma

I haven’t wanted to post because there’s just so much, so much deep tragedy and trauma in my life. I don’t want to write any of it down because I want to pretend none of it is true. But as a person who has chosen to always live in truth and joy and integrity, no matter what happens, I guess I should say it. Except I can’t. So for now, I’m not going to even write about my deep deep…

  • Slow Mo

We decided to visit the nonfiction children’s section of the West Tisbury library today just to mix things up. Henry wanted a book on Superman, and it occurs to me that we weren’t able to find it because any books on the caped crusader would have been in fiction, but in any case, we filled our book bags with as many books as we could carry. I love introducing the kids to Picasso and Georgia O’Keefe and Jazz musicians, so…

The Effects of Color on the Classroom

Everyone seems to love neutral colors: gray, beige, off-white… but for me, neutral colors turn me into Eeyore. I feel sleepy and sad. My color tastes are more aligned with Tigger, and when I say Tigger, I mean Tigger sent bouncing into a room with a gallon of pink paint in one paw and a gallon of glitter in the other.
But is there a happy medium? What works best for kids? What enhances their learning, enriches their brain, and soothes their soul?
