ANNOUNCEMENT

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

I am thrilled to announce that my dream is coming true!

I will be a Judge for the Stella Shouting Contest at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in New Orleans in March 2022.

This is a dream for me as I have taken my children to the contest since they were toddlers where they would scream Stella at the top of their lungs. (I was so proud.) I am a huge Tennessee Williams fan, so imagine my delight when I learned about the Stella Shouting contest in the French Quarter! One of the many reasons I love New Orleans.

If you happen to be in NOLA in March, come scream at me!

Le Petit Theater is right in the heart of the Quarter across from St. Louis Cathedral. It’s an amazing place to see a show—very glamorous, even the children’s side. The shows are professional level, and you can’t help but feel connected to old theater vibes in this place. To read about its resident ghosts, click here.

A Whole Lotta Shaking Going On… in Samba

Humor me if you will, and picture this: 1) a chicken trying to fly; 2) a dog doing a full body shake after a bath; 3) and an oompa loompa doing jumping jacks. Now, meld those three images together. Got it? If so, you have a pretty good idea of what I looked like at a samba class the other night.

  • Letter to Times Picayune

Letter to Times Picayune   As my daughter just entered Kindergarten in New Orleans, I recently took a tour of several schools in the area. I was appalled! Most of the schools I toured were upscale private schools, the best education New Orleans has to offer, and yet unhealthy environments for young children. The kindergartens were full of plastic clutter, sugary foods, and media. The teachers showed me the “worksheets” the children would be doing for homework during the year….

  • Another Magical Moment in New Orleans

Originally published in Louisiana Homes and Gardens in April 2007 I’ve always dreamed of singing jazz songs in a smoky voice while lying on a piano in a long slinky silver silk gown. I would captivate my audience with my hypnotic voice and I would wear a gardenia in my black curls. Reality check: I have no piano, no silver gown, my hair is blond, and quite frankly, I can’t sing very well, unless I’ve had two or more…

  • Pirate’s Alley

Pirate’s Alley—The name alone is reason to enough to walk this alleyway next to St. Louis Cathedral. Walk this alleyway and close your eyes and picture the gorgeous glam pirates who once walked these streets in their big feathered hats, handsome tanned faces and thigh-high leather boots framing muscular thighs… ok I know I’m fantasizing here, but indulge me if you will… if it’s pirate fest, you may even open your eyes and see a real pirate! Or at least…

    My Beautiful Barbarians

This blog post is a combination of one I wrote in 2007, continued in 2013 and finished in 2019, although maybe I’ll add to it in another 6 years.         My three-year-old daughter just took a parasol out of her baby brother’s hand. I say, “Miss Annabelle, you can not take toys from Henry.” She glares at me, stomping one bare foot and growling. She’s standing in her Curious George underwear, so small and delicate, her hair in wild toddler curls…
