Glamour Girls Guide to Online Shopping

Ok, Online shopping opens up a whole new world to Glamour Girls everywhere. It’s not my favorite–I need to see how things fit before I buy–but you can’t beat the convenience of lying in bed in your pajamas and ordering a spectacular pair of shoes to your doorstep. I, of course, love all things vintage and retro, so here’s my list of favorite online shopping:
Trashy Diva
My favorite shop of all time is located in New Orleans and since I no longer live there, I get my fix by visiting their website. I have spent so much time trying on their different styles of dresses that I know why looks good on me and I know the prints and fabrics. I LOVE their silks and velvets–they are incomparable. And the halter Trixie style in silk–I own several of them and they look great on everyone. Candace Gwynn is a genius at designing retro dresses for modern women to flatter many different body types. My all time favorite purchase from there: my black and ivory silk velvet Garbo coat. A showstopper piece that is comfortable, glamorous, and stunning all at the same time!

My other favorite shop for buying retro style clothing online is Pinup Girl Clothing. I have loved everything I have bought–especially their retro swimsuits which ooze glamour. They are always coming out with new styles, and they carry my favorite line of handbags: Lux Deville.

For sheer pomp and glamour, you can’t beat this stunning cathedral. Standing sentry over the French Quarter for hundreds of years, this is one building I really wish could talk! It is surrounded by the first apartment buildings every built in this country, the Pontalba buildings, and overlooks the Quarter and the Mississippi. It’s beautiful, and I saw Ellis Marsalis perform a Christmas concert there a while back. (We left when my 2-year-old started splashing in the holy water.) The…

  • The Super Deluxe Vintage Shop: Decades

So I adore Decades. It is a shop on Melrose in Los Angeles that has the most fabulous new and vintage collection EVER. Imagine if you’re Catherine Deneuve or Angelica Huston and you are interested in passing along a few pieces from your closet to people who will appreciate them properly: both of them did this through Decades. Have a few Birkins you’re tired of seeing unused in your closet? Send them to Decades. If you’re Julia Roberts or Angelina…

  • Fairies, Pippi Longstocking, and Tennessee Williams

What a day! I went to the French Quarter this morning for a Master Class on writing at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival and as I was walking down Bourbon Street at 9am, I was so overwhelmed. There is something about the Quarter–it’s iconic for me. And it’s not just that I’m looking around and seeing the same buildings people saw 300 years ago; it teems with culture, and there’s an authenticity and beauty there that is incomparable. Walking into…

  • ANNOUNCEMENT

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! I am thrilled to announce that my dream is coming true! I will be a Judge for the Stella Shouting Contest at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in New Orleans in March 2022. This is a dream for me as I have taken my children to the contest since they were toddlers where they would scream Stella at the top of their lungs. (I was so proud.) I am a huge Tennessee Williams fan, so imagine…

  • Faulkner’s House Bookstore in Pirate’s Alley

Faulkner House—Joe LaSalle, the adorable proprietor who lives in the house, is a professor of English (of course) and runs the Words and Music Fest. The tiny bookstore carries a wide variety of fabulous books, the collection of walking canes is very romantic, and when asked about the ghost of William Faulkner, Mr. LaSalle says he occasionally smells pipe smoke wafting in the air (Faulkner smoked pipes!). Horse and Carriage Rides—yes they are pulled by mules instead of gorgeous high-stepping…

  • Stella Restaurant in the Quarter

Stella is arguably the best restaurant in New Orleans (and that’s saying something!). Stella is fancy and super fabulous with that attention to detail that takes it a step ahead of all others. Peanut allergy? They’ll note it in their computer so every time you reserve a table, they know what you can’t eat! The sommelier, John, is the best we’ve ever had. So affable, knowledgeable, and lovely–it’s worth it to go just to meet him. Stella is on Chartres…
