The Super Deluxe Vintage Shop: Decades

So I adore Decades. It is a shop on Melrose in Los Angeles that has the most fabulous new and vintage collection EVER. Imagine if you’re Catherine Deneuve or Angelica Huston and you are interested in passing along a few pieces from your closet to people who will appreciate them properly: both of them did this through Decades. Have a few Birkins you’re tired of seeing unused in your closet? Send them to Decades. If you’re Julia Roberts or Angelina Jolie and you want something fabulous for the red carpet, look no further.

Owner Cameron Silver is adorable and so funny and dramatic, and he’s an old friend of mine. I’ve known Cameron since we were 18 years old and he lived in his parents pool house in Beverly Hills and I lived down the street. I adored him then and am happy to cheer on his success. If you want to laugh till your stomach hurts, watch Bravo’s reality tv show of Cameron and his business partner, Christos called “Dukes of Melrose.” Even my husband loved the show! Cameron is also obsessively passionate about Hermes and this is a hilarious clip of him showing off his custom Hermes collection (and you’ll see why he’s a top name in fashion).

Time magazine also recognized his talent for fashion and named him one of the “25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion” in 2002. He is currently traveling all over the world promoting his exquisite book, Decades, but you can shop at the store online, or call the shop and tell them what you’re looking for and see if they have it. My favorite salesperson there is Marcus.

Stella is arguably the best restaurant in New Orleans (and that’s saying something!). Stella is fancy and super fabulous with that attention to detail that takes it a step ahead of all others. Peanut allergy? They’ll note it in their computer so every time you reserve a table, they know what you can’t eat! The sommelier, John, is the best we’ve ever had. So affable, knowledgeable, and lovely–it’s worth it to go just to meet him. Stella is on Chartres…

  • St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter

For sheer pomp and glamour, you can’t beat this stunning cathedral. Standing sentry over the French Quarter for hundreds of years, this is one building I really wish could talk! It is surrounded by the first apartment buildings every built in this country, the Pontalba buildings, and overlooks the Quarter and the Mississippi. It’s beautiful, and I saw Ellis Marsalis perform a Christmas concert there a while back. (We left when my 2-year-old started splashing in the holy water.) The…

  • Fifi Mahoney’s

Fifi Mahoney’s! A showgirl’s dream on Royal Street in the French Quarter, Fifi Mahoney’s is beyond fabulous! When I was a showgirl in Los Angeles, I had to get my wigs and makeup at skanky smelly dives on Hollywood Boulevard. I thought I had stepped into Showgirl Heaven when I entered Fifi’s. A red velvet couch shaped like lips, three rooms full of anything a showgirl could desire! A front room full of fabulous makeup, sparkly jewels and hairbands with…

  • Stella!!

Cathy and I took Henry and Annabelle to the French Quarter today to watch the climax of the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival; the Stella shouting contest. Today was the perfect day–no humidity, no extreme heat–crisp air, a brilliantly sunny day–no clouds, blue sky–incredible day in NOLA. We looked at the street artists–we liked the mermaids–and had beignets at Cafe Du Monde. We climbed and played and got balloon animals and the kids had their faces painted. Henry was a wolf…

  • Yvonne LaFleur

Yvonne LaFleur—All the Uptown ladies buy their hats and ballgowns here. Located behind Camellia Grill on Carrollton, this store is worth visiting even if you don’t need bridal lingerie! Every corner of the store looks like a movie set. We’re talking boas and faux furs and silks and sparkles…When you walk in you will immediately notice the smell of violets wafting from every corner of the store. That’s a scent Yvonne created herself in London back in the 60’s and…

  • New Orleans Easter

We had the BEST Easter!! No church for us–we went to the Easter parade in the French Quarter led by an 80-year-old Bourbon Street Stripper! It was a whole lot more fun than church, and more representative of the beginning of Spring–beauty, fertility, life, fun, babies, treasures, joy…  Let’s back up a bit. The weather has been so perfectly gorgeous that we ran very late yesterday and our egg dying turned into a bit of a frenzy. That didn’t stop George…
